TELUS STORYHIVE supports the distribution of your completed programs by making them available on our Optik TV Video On Demand platform

Applications for Distribution on TELUS Optik TV Video On Demand can be submitted for review at any time.  Please note that TELUS does not pay license fees for content submitted for Distribution on our platforms.  Content is accessible for free 24/7 to our TELUS Optik TV subscribers in BC and Alberta.

Your content…

  • Will not receive any license fees for distribution on our Optik TV Video on Demand platform. TELUS STORYHIVE does NOT pay for completed programs.
  • Must have all the necessary rights, releases and clearances for your program to appear on TELUS Optik TV Video on Demand, in English, for a period of 10 years.
  • Will not be changed by TELUS other than to insert a disclaimer card at the head of the program, add a viewer advisory and/or rating card if necessary, and beep/make inaudible any coarse language.
  • Will need a full transcription of each of your programs (for closed captioning). Transcripts may be submitted as a word or text file. If a full transcription is not available, please contact us to discuss alternatives.

A few things to consider

  • Does your program reflect the local community and a diversity of voices?
  • Does your program present innovative ideas and alternative views with a balanced viewpoint on existing or emerging issues of importance in the community?
  • Does your program feature local places and events in arts, culture, education or sport?
  • Does your program comply with all laws, regulations and policies governing content, taste, community reflection and diversity of voices including the Canadian Broadcasting Act, CRTC Best Practice Code, and other relevant Canadian laws?
Eligibility & criteria

Eligibility

All projects must meet certain requirements:

    The program must originate from a person who:

    • is not employed by TELUS or another Broadcast Distribution Undertaking (BDU); AND
    • is resident in BC or Alberta.

Most of our programs come from Vancouver Lower Mainland1, Edmonton2 or Calgary3.  However, we are also looking for content from creators from other communities in BC and Alberta including (but not limited to) Kamloops, Kelowna, Nanaimo, Penticton, Prince George, Vernon, Victoria, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Red Deer (together with Vancouver Lower Mainland, Edmonton and Calgary).

 

Criteria

TELUS can support the distribution of your completed programs by making them available on our Optik TV Video on Demand platform.  Community programming is accessible for free 24/7 to our Optik TV subscribers in BC and Alberta.  Applications for programs seeking Distribution support are evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Does the program reflect the local community and a diversity of voices?
  • Does the program present innovative ideas and alternative views with a balanced viewpoint on existing or emerging issues of importance in the community?
  • Does the program feature local places and events?
  • Does the program comply with all laws, regulations and policies governing content, taste, community reflection and diversity of voices including the Canadian Broadcasting Act, CRTC Best Practice Code, and other relevant Canadian laws?

 

Important Notes:

  • TELUS STORYHIVE does NOT pay any license fees for completed programs selected for distribution on our Optik TV Video on Demand platform.
  • You must have all the necessary rights, releases and clearances for your program to appear on TELUS Optik TV Video on Demand, in English, for a period of 10 years.
  • TELUS will not make any changes to your program other than to insert a disclaimer card at the head of the program, add a viewer advisory and/or rating card if necessary, and beep/make inaudible any coarse language.

  • Your program can NOT contain any advertising or words promoting goods or services.
  • Submitted content MUST meet ALL technical specifications for TELUS Optik TV Video on Demand  including artwork.

Programs submitted for Distribution are reviewed on a year-round basis, and are not subject to the annual application deadlines.

FAQs

Q: Does our submission screener need to meet the A/V Technical Requirements?

A: No. We only ask that you submit a digital link to your program(s) for our review (for example, a YouTube or Vimeo link). This information will be collected as part of the application process. If your program(s) are not hosted online, you may send us the videos on a USB key – please make a note of this in your application, and a TELUS team member will contact you to let you know where it can be mailed.

 

Q: Will you run our show if it has run on another community channel?

A: Yes, we will review and consider all submissions for programming on Optik TV VOD platform, regardless of prior or current community channel runs.

 

Q: Does TELUS STORYHIVE pay a license fee for distribution?

A: TELUS STORYHIVE does NOT pay any license fees for completed programs selected for distribution on our Optik TV Video on Demand platform. Our financial contribution to projects which receive Distribution Support is for closed captioning and re-encoding so that the content complies with CRTC broadcast regulations and our technical requirements. Accepted projects receive exposure and gain audience by being made available for free on Optik TV Video on Demand to our 1,000,000+ Optik TV subscribers in BC and Alberta.

 

Q: How do I know you received my application?

A: All applications are made through our online portal – once you have electronically submitted, you will receive a confirmation via email, including a reference number.

 

Q: Once I deliver my project, how long does it take to be made available on TELUS Optik TV VOD?

A: Upon accepted delivery to TELUS, it can take up to 4 weeks, or more, to make your program available on the VOD platform

 

Q: We have not yet completed Production, and we require a Letter of Intent (LOI) to Distribute from TELUS in order to be eligible for funding from other agencies/groups. How can I get this LOI from TELUS?

A: We do not issue LOI’s for Distribution. Only COMPLETED programs may apply for Distribution Support, and must be available for screening at the time of application.

 

Q: Am I able to include advertising within my project?

A: Programs containing advertising as well as words promoting goods or services, are NOT eligible for Distribution.

Application details

  • Applications for Distribution on TELUS Optik TV Video On Demand can be submitted for review at any time
  • Partial or incomplete applications will be ineligible for review until they are complete. TELUS STORYHIVE may request that you submit additional documentation or information to complete your submission.

The submission process is automated through our online application platform. You will receive a notification that we have received your application after you have submitted it to us. Within approximately 2-4 weeks of your submission, we will notify you of any deficiencies in your application that need to be remedied before your application will be considered complete.
